The Boys and Girls Club of Cypress recently celebrated the spring 2016 completion of the SMART Girls program with a party for the young ladies and their families. The evening included a healthy dinner that was prepared by the SMART Girls and the Cypress Soroptimists, an inspirational message from Mayor Mariellen Yarc, and an award ceremony to recognize the achievements of the program participants.The girls had a short presentation for us to tell us how the program was meaningful to them this year. SMART Girls is short for Skills Mastery and Resistance Training, and is a program of the Boys and Girls Club. Cypress Soroptimist sponsors and volunteers as mentors for this yearly spring program.SMART Girls coordinator Brittany Stone and Soroptimist member Donna Kastner organizes the provided 10 week curriculum which includes discussion, favors and snacks. New topics this year included discussions on civic leadership, careers/education, and finances. Guest speakers were Dr. Ha, Officer Marquez, Andrea Burns, and Mayor Yarc.There were field trips to Chuze Fitness and Cypress Town Hall. Soroptimist International is a worldwide volunteer organization working to improve the lives of women and girls by supporting programs leading to social and economic empowerment. We meet bi-monthly; the 2nd Wednesday at noon and the 4th Wednesday at 5:30pm at the Cypress Courtyard by Marriott.
